Halo, Germany!
Several students from Oldenburg Academy recently returned from a trip abroad. OA students visited four countries in twelve days. The countries visited were Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. Oldenburg Academy’s German teacher, Julie Brown, arranged the tour.
The first stop on the tour was Vienna, Austria where students learned about the Hapsburgs, a family who once ruled over half of Europe. A visit was made to the Ring, a series of wide boulevards commissioned by Emperor Franz Josef in 1857. Students saw the Parliament, the flower-adorned City Hall, and the Hofburg, where the Hapsburg dynasty prevailed. Students also visited the Schonbrunn Palace, where Marie Antoinette spent her childhood.
In Salzburg students were able to visit the birthplace of Mozart before traveling on to Munich. In Munich students experienced the medieval to the modern. While there they saw the Olympic Stadium, the BMW headquarters, the fashionable Schwabing district and the Residenz, former home of the Wittelsbach dukes of Bavaria. A visit was made to Dachau, a WWII Nazi concentration camp built in 1933 and liberated by the Allies in 1945. It now serves as a memorial museum. In Marienplatz, students saw the neo-Gothic New City Hall with its famous Glockenspeil and the well-known Hofbrauhaus, once the royal brewery of the Kingdom of Bavaria.
On the way to Liechtenstein, a stop was made to tour the Neuschwanstein Castle. Following a brief stay in Liechtenstein, students traveled on to the Lucerne region. Here the Swiss Alps rose behind the shores of Lake Lucerne and provided a stunning backdrop to one of Switzerland’s most picturesque cities. A night was spent at the top of a Swiss Alp in a 500-year-old inn. While there students saw the moving Lion Monument, or Lowendenkmai, a sandstone statue commemorating the Swiss guards slain in the 1792 Paris storming of the Tuileries. A walk was made through Lucerne’s winding cobbled streets to the Chapel Bridge, or Kapellbruke. This bridge dates back to the medieval times and is filled with many murals. While in Lucerne students rode a train to the top of Mount Pilatus.
After leaving Lucerne, students travelled via the Rhine Falls and the Black Forest to Heidelberg. The Heidelberg Castle, home the world’s largest wine barrel, was toured while there. Students traveled to Rhineland, took a boat cruise on the Rhine River, visited the Cologne Cathedral, the birthplace of Beethoven in Koblenz, and the Museum of German History.

Blessing of OA Graduates
(from Sister Mary Beth Gianoli, OSF, OA Board Member, Sisters' Council Member)
Graduates of the Class of 2015,
On behalf of the Sisters of St. Francis and our Associates, I extend congratulations to each of you and to your families.
As you continue on life’s journey, we offer the following prayer:
God of all blessings,
We thank you for the gift of the Oldenburg Academy Class of 2015;
their excitement, their wonder and curiosity, their encouraging words.
Their contributions have blessed and challenged us, and we have become a richer and more diverse community because of them.
Help these graduates remember all those who inspired them during their days at Oldenburg Academy.
Remind them of the challenges that they faced and overcame.
Calm their fears with the awareness that they are accepted and loved.
Allow these graduates to realize just how well prepared they are to address the needs of the world.
Strengthen their resolve to walk in the footsteps of Francis, Clare, and Jesus.
Encourage them to serve as modern-day disciples in a world that needs their spirit.
Guide their feet as they move through life.
Help them to lead others into the warmth and promise of your light.
We ask this blessing upon the graduates and their families
in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Seniors Named Boys Basketball Academic All-State
Oldenburg Academy of the Immaculate Conception congratulates seniors Matty Hurm (1st Team), Ted Geis (Honorable Mention), and Cory Schuman (Honorable Mention) on being named Indiana Boys Basketball Academic All-State. This is a very high honor as only 35 Senior boys basketball players in the entire state are selected to the squad. The selection makes no distinction by school enrollment. The IBCA Academic All-State team is a program where academic prowess and athletic prowess both are considered in the selections. Items such as grade-point average, college board scores and academic class rank are considered along with athletic performance in areas such as points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game and shooting percentage.
IBCA-member head coaches from schools across the state may nominate their seniors who meet criteria that include a 3.5 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale, a class rank in the upper 25 percent of one's class, an SAT score of 1,500 or an ACT score of 23. Once nominations are received, an IBCA committee reviews the information and determines awards for first team and honorable mention.

Seniors Named National Merit Finalists
Oldenburg Academy of the Immaculate Conception is pleased to announce that Brian Ulrich '15 of Sunman and Luke Wukusick '15 of Batesville have been named National Merit Finalists.
In this competition, about 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
To become a Finalist, Mr Ulrich, Mr. Wukusick and Oldenburg Academy submitted detailed scholarship applications in which OA provided information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors and awards received. From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 advanced to the Finalist level and were recently notified of this designation. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.
Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2015. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 240 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.
National Merit Scholarship winners of 2015 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 291,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

OA Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award
Oldenburg Academy of the Immaculate Conception bestowed the prestigious “Outstanding Volunteer of the Year” Award to Sr. Dominic Doyle, OSF at their annual Catholic Schools Week Mass. Sr. Dominica was born in Indianapolis, the 2nd of four children. After attending Our Lady of Lourdes grade school and ICA/Oldenburg Academy, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1937. She went on to receive degrees from Marian University, Creighton University and certifications from University of Cincinnati and Xavier University. She was a teacher and administrator from 1944 – 2005. Thirty-nine of those years were spent at St. Michael’s in Brookville. In 2004 she received the Catholic School Values Award from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
She started volunteering for OA in the summer of 2005. Some of the numerous services she has provided for the Academy over the last 10 years include: counting money and putting together deposits; filing of paid invoices, deposit slips, student files, and cafeteria reports; adding timecards; checking math on reports; making sure birthday cards are delivered on time; making files for new students and vendors; proofreading and alphabetizing; shredding; and stuffing envelopes and helping with mailings.
President Diane H. Laake states: “Her tenacious dedication to others, to her religious community, and most importantly, to God make Sr. Dominica a role model for our young men and women at the Academy and an inspiration for the rest of us. Please join us in congratulating Sr. Dominica Doyle, Oldenburg Academy’s 2015 Outstanding Volunteer”.

OA Reflection & Prayer for Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015
Please read and show the following:
This is a video from last year that summarizes the March for Life and the Prayer Vigil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vcQJzZLpbM
A time lapse video of the marchers in 2011: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9Hjc5MCu3s
A prayer from John Paul II in his encyclical on the Gospel of Life; it was prayed on the feast of the Annunciation, when we celebrate Jesus’ conception in Mary’s womb:
O Mary,
bright dawn of the new world,
Mother of the living,
to you do we entrust the cause of life
Look down, O Mother,
upon the vast numbers
of babies not allowed to be born,
of the poor whose lives are made difficult,
of men and women
who are victims of brutal violence,
of the elderly and the sick killed
by indifference or out of misguided mercy.
Grant that all who believe in your Son
may proclaim the Gospel of life
with honesty and love
to the people of our time.
Obtain for them the grace
to accept that Gospel
as a gift ever new,
the joy of celebrating it with gratitude
throughout their lives
and the courage to bear witness to it
resolutely, in order to build,
together with all people of good will,
the civilization of truth and love,
to the praise and glory of God,
the Creator and lover of life. Amen.

Maverick Challenge Hosted at Oldenburg Academy
The Maverick Challenge, a business planning competition sponsored by Ripley County Eco15, Franklin County Community Foundation, Ripley County Community Foundation, Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce and Oldenburg Academy was hosted at Oldenburg Academy on December 12, 2014. Community judges adjudicated the 11 students based on the business plans and products they created for the competition. Oldenburg Academy was the only school to participate in the program from Ripley and Franklin County.
The Maverick Challenge was started in 2008 by the Columbus Indiana Chamber of Commerce, and has been a growing program since. The competition is intended to simulate the real-world process of entrepreneurs soliciting start up funds from early-stage investors, successful entrepreneurs and community leaders. Oldenburg Academy Business Teacher Jonathon Maple is the head of the Franklin/Ripley County competition and leads the challenge at the school, “I’m so proud of the students – they challenged themselves to go through a process that is real-life.” Students had the opportunity to work with business and community mentors as well as experience feedback from professional judges.
The winners were announced on Monday, December 18, 2014: Third place winner, which received $200, was FuseBox, a customizable backpack business plan completed by seniors Christopher Nurrenberg and Luke Wukusick. Second place winner receiving $300 was Razain, a unique wristwatch with features such as a vibrating alarm invented by seniors Ryne Domingo & Matty Hurm. The first place winner received $500 and went to Two Peas in a Pod, a cooking class in Batesville, Indiana targeting locally grown foods, started by seniors Kirsten Ricke and Sarah Wilder. Anyone interested in getting involved with the 2015 Maverick Challenge can contact Jonathon Maple at jmaple@oldenburgacademy.org,“It is a great opportunity to work with some of the most inspiring students in southeastern Indiana.”

Act of Entrustment to Mary
At our school Mass on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) each Freshman, new faculty/staff, and visitor received a blessed Miraculous Medal. The Association of the Miraculous Medal notes that there is no superstition or magic connected with the Miraculous Medal, nor is it "a good luck charm." Rather, it is "a testimony to faith and the power of trusting prayer. Its greatest miracles are those of patience, forgiveness, repentance, and faith." The prayer below fits well with the meaning of the Miraculous Medal. You are encouraged to entrust your family to Mary using the prayer below, remembering that Mary’s last words in Scripture are: “Do whatever He (Jesus) tells you.” (John 2:5), and that she always leads us to her Son.For more information on the Miraculous Medal: marian.org/news/The-Meaning-of-the-Miraculous-Medal-2942.
ACT OF ENTRUSTMENT TO MARY
(Adapted from Pope Francis’ Act of Entrustment on Oct. 13, 2013)
Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception,
with renewed gratitude for your motherly presence
we join in the voice of all generations that call you blessed. We celebrate in you the great works of God,
who never tires of lowering himself in mercy over humanity,
afflicted by evil and wounded by sin,
to heal and to save it.
Accept with the benevolence of a Mother
this act of entrustment that we make in faith today.
We are certain that each one of us is precious in your eyes
and that nothing in our hearts has estranged you.
May that we allow your sweet gaze
to reach us and the perpetual warmth of your smile.
Guard our life with your embrace:
bless and strengthen every desire for good;
give new life and nourishment to faith;
sustain and enlighten hope;
awaken and animate charity;
guide us all on the path to holiness.
Teach us your own special love for the little and the poor,
for the excluded and the suffering,
for sinners and the wounded of heart:
gather all people under you protection
and give us all to your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus.
Amen.

OA Senior Awarded for Excellence
The American Senior Communities has recently honored key employees with the coveted “Quest for Excellence Award.” Among those receiving top awards was Oldenburg Academy’s senior Mason Garwood, Activities Assistant at Arbor Grove Village in Greensburg. The Quest for Excellence Award honors one great employee from each of the 65 communities operated by American Senior Communities. The recipient must always demonstrate an outstanding commitment and dedication to his or her job, a positive attitude and a “whatever it takes” passion. The award ceremony was held at The Ritz Charles, Carmel; the ceremony included a speech by Steve Gililand a bestselling author and energetic motivational speaker. After listening to the speaker, Garwood was presented with $1,000 cash and a $10,000 scholarship for his outstanding work.
Mason began working at Arbor Grove Village when he was 16 years old. He said he took the job “because he needed a job” but ended up “loving his job”. He comments that he “knows the residents won’t remember him everyday but he loves putting a smile on their face.” Last year on Mother’s Day, Mason brought all of the female staff and residents roses with notes attached thanking them for being wonderful mothers and women.

OA Alumni Named Realizing the Dream Recipient
The University of Notre Dame has selected OA Alumni Natalie Pottschmidt, Class of 2013, as its "Realizing the Dream" recipient -- a $2000 scholarship. This program is funded by Lilly Endowment.
Realizing the Dream is a program that acknowledges first-generation college students for outstanding achievement in their freshman year and are now in their sophomore year. It has been funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc. since 1989. The program was conceived and developed by three individuals who had themselves been first-generation college students -- Dr. William C. Bonifield, then Vice-President for Education, Lilly Endowment, and now retired Director of McDermond Center for Management and Entrepreneurship, Depauw University; Mr. William DuBois Jr., then President of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Indiana, and now retired Executive Assistant for Public Relations, Ivy Tech Community College; and Dr. Louis C. Gatto, then the retiring President of Marian College (University), and the former Executive Director of the Indiana Educational Facilities Authority.
Each selected student receives a $2,000 scholarship and are asked to name a secondary teacher that most influenced their decision to attend college. The nominated teacher receives a $1,000 Professional Development Grant. Each fall there is a banquet held in Indianapolis to honor the student and their selected teacher. Additional family members are encouraged to attend.

OA Launches First National Business Honor Society in State of Indiana
Oldenburg Academy of the Immaculate Conception is proud to announce that they are the first school in the state of Indiana to launch a National Business Honor Society Chapter. New members were inducted at the first meeting, September 10, 2014. In order to enter the elite society, juniors/seniors must complete or be enrolled in their third business course and have above a 3.0 overall GPA, and over a 3.5 GPA in business courses. An application is required and is reviewed based on the three pillars of the National Business Honor Society: Involvement, Leadership and Achievement. OA Business/Journalism Teacher Jonathon Maple chose to start the chapter this year, “I felt the pillars of the organization aligned perfectly with what we expect OA students to model: high levels of involvement through outstanding leadership and achievement.” The chapter has 19 juniors/seniors serving as charter members. Brooke Siefert was nominated President; Kirsten Ricke, Vice-President; Ella Lamping, Secretary; Aaron Moorman, Treasurer. The National Business Honor Society is part of the National Business Education Association.
Part of the organization will be involved in service learning. “While this organization is definitely expected to promote and recognize these 19 dynamic students, I also think it is important that we promote and recognize our local businesses,” Maple states. The group is taking over the town of Oldenburg’s event, Holidays Under the Spires, December 6, 2014. “This is such a great way to get students involved in planning an event and immersing them into working together on something real,” Maple states. The group will be responsible for promotion and event line-ups; they have two separate committees. Right now, the committees are working on a website, social media promotion, and a fun listing of events. Senior Sarah Wilder is excited about the upcoming event; “it’s fun to be able to help promote such a fun event for the whole community.” Senior Ryne Domingo says that he is “excited to be part of the event’s planning and looks forward to celebrating in December.”
"We definitely hit the ground running with this group – they accepted the challenge, and are such an inspiring group to work with – always willing to take on more to make this event the best it can be. I think we’ve definitely set the bar high for other National Business Honor Society groups," Maple concluded. Anyone interested in becoming involved with the Holidays Under the Spires event can contact Maple at Oldenburg Academy.

OA Football Wraps Up Sophomore Season 6-3
A sluggish start ended well for the second year Oldenburg Academy football program in its final game of the 2014 season. The result was a 41-13 rout of Traders Point Christian Academy and a remarkable turnaround from a 1-6 season a year ago. The Twisters ended the programs second season with a 6-3 record. “We started out slow in this one. To be honest, it was a little difficult getting up for this game. Last game of the year, a winless opponent, and no playoffs to look forward to made it very difficult.” Once they got it going though, they did so in a big way. The OA offense ended the night with 428 yards of total offense with 5 different players finding the end zone. Junior QB Matt Moorman got the scoring underway late in the first quarter when he found junior WR Nick Bischoff on a 49 yard strike. Moorman added a pair of TD runs in the second quarter, followed by a 6 yard TD run by freshman Zach West to take a 27-6 lead into halftime. “Zach played a great ballgame. He had a huge interception, scored a TD, and had 7 tackles on defense.” The Twisters once again came out a little flat to start the 3rd quarter but ended the night in dramatic fashion. Senior Mason Garwood scored his only TD of the year on a 2 yard run, followed by senior Ryne Domingo scoring on a 67 yard rumble. It was Domingo’s first and only score of his high school playing career. “We wanted to try and get those two guys in the end zone. They, along with our other senior Luke Roberts, have done so much for OA football. There were a lot of tears after the game, but once this program really takes off they can look back on this and know they started this thing.” Both Domingo and Garwood also ended the night with double digit tackles on defense. Fellow senior Luke Roberts tallied nearly 100 yards on the ground from his running back position. OA will begin sectional play next year. With the huge improvement from this year to last, head coach Wes Gillman expects to make some noise in the playoffs in its first year eligible. “We’ll have a fairly large, experienced group of seniors next year. Couple that with our younger guys getting a year older and the addition of new players, and we could be a good football team. The future is definitely bright for this program.”

OA’s Partnership with Ivy Tech and Marian University – “So worth it!”
Since 2012, Oldenburg Academy has partnered with Ivy Tech to offer dual credit courses to our students, enhancing our already challenging college preparatory curriculum. This fall, Oldenburg Academy added dual credit with sister school Marian University in three fine arts courses as noted by an asterisk on the table below. While dual credit is available in many high schools, what makes this a unique program at OA is that all dual credit courses are taught by OA teachers on OA’s campus. This means these instructors are all considered qualified to be college adjuncts and the curriculum that is offered as part of our regular course offering is of collegiate challenge.
The following table indicates the number of students (out of a total school enrollment of 202) who could earn dual credit in each course this year.

In many colleges and universities, Advanced Placement (AP) scores of three (3) or more may be used for college credit. Advanced Placement curriculum is driven by the College Board, not individual teachers, based on college level course work. At Oldenburg Academy, all students enrolled in AP classes are required to take the respective AP test.
Oldenburg Academy offers 11 AP courses open to all interested students. Last year, 100% of students who enrolled in the following AP courses passed with scores high enough to earn college credit: German, Chinese, English Literature and Composition, Studio Art: Drawing, and Studio Art: 2-D Design. Additionally, 77% of students who took the AP exam in their respective courses scored well enough to potentially earn college credit.

Luke Weisenbach Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors which a high school student can receive, but along with membership goes one of the greatest responsibilities. This responsibility is to demonstrate, uphold, and encourage others to promote the qualities - character, scholarship, leadership, and service- for which this organization stands. Our local Sedes Sapientiae Chapter of NHS is only the beginning: members now have to carry on the high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character in order to continue as members of the National Honor Society.
The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary High School Principals. The purpose of the NHS is stated in its constitution: “The object of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate the desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the students.”

Student Named Nation Merit Commended Scholar
Congratulations to Senior Christopher Nurrenberg who has been named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by principal Bettina Rose to this scholastically talented senior.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2015 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
"The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

Ball State University helps fund OA Business Department
Through the generous funding of two foundations, Oldenburg Academy business and journalism students are experiencing a new classroom environment this school year. Ball State University awarded OA Business/Journalism Teacher Jonathon Maple the 2014 Ball State Teachers College Alumni Society Innovative Grant. Also in helping with the 4-year classroom renovation plan, the Will and Dot Ricke Fund through the Decatur County Community Foundation help fund the renovations. Through these grants, thirty office chairs could be purchased and installed for the start of the school year. Maple, the 2014 Colin Goodnight Technology Educator of the Year, was also able to use prize money to purchase an Apple TV, and 55” flat screen television for his classroom. “Truly, I am so grateful for all of the help and support of the granting organizations – students are having the opportunity to have be challenged and inspired in a 21st century business classroom – awesome preparation for college,” Maple commented. The new office chairs accompany conference room tables simulating a real-world business conference room. Oldenburg Academy is grateful for the support of local organizations.
OA Kicks Off 2014 Football Season
Oldenburg Academy kicked off the 2014 Football Season with a scrimmage against Trinity Lutheran Friday evening. This is the second year that OA will field a team. Coming off of last year’s season with one win, the Twisters are looking forward to a strong showing this year. The scrimmage showed both improvement and optimism for the coming season.
Coach Wes Gillman was pleased with the offense. Out of 42 offensive plays, the Twisters accumulated 16 first-downs and 7 touchdowns. Junior Quarterback Matt Moorman finished with a completion percentage of 67% (12 of 18 passes) for 130 yards, 4 touchdowns, and one interception. Moorman ran the ball five times for six yards with one touchdown and lost fumble. Tight End Jason Kline ended with a big evening with six receptions for 32 yards and two touchdowns. Newcomer Nick Bischoff, junior wide receiver and running back, had a big night receiving, hauling in four passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Wide receiver, Dominic Cigolotti added two receptions for 32 yards. Gillman commented “our offensive line did an outstanding job of giving Matt time to throw and our receivers were able to get open all night.”
The running game started out slow, but came on strong later ending the night with 22 rushes for 100 yards, 3 touchdowns and one lost fumble. Senior running back Luke Roberts is attributed to 9 rushes for 42 yards and a touchdown. Junior Running Back Mike He had 7 rushes for 44 yards, and Freshman Owen Sporleder had 1 rush for 8 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Twisters only gave up 150 yards. Gillman was “most impressed with their improvement, we were solid against the run and got great penetration from our defensive line play.” Defensive Tackle Junior John Pelzel paved the path with 3 solo tackles, all for loss of yardage. Senior Mason Garwood recorded three solo tackles with one assist, followed by Senior Ryne Domingo who ended the night with two solo tackles and six assists. Junior Brady Sterchi added two solo tackles and one assist as well.
The Twisters suffered one injury – Freshman center Kyle Kline went down with a broken fibula and will have to miss the rest of the season. Kline could’ve seen significant playing time for the Twisters. Gillman, trying to stay optimistic, is looking forward to the next three years with Kline, “he is going to be a phenomenal offensive and defensive lineman.”
Overall, the Twisters are looking forward to a successful season. The team travels to challenge the Indianapolis Crimson Knights this coming Friday, starting at 7pm.
