Play Like A Champion Today Program

Oldenburg Academy has partnered with the University of Notre Dame to implement the Play Like a Champion Today (PLC) Educational Program throughout the athletic department.

The program is a research-based, athlete-centered curriculum designed to:

  • Help coaches to understand and fulfill their role as teachers of sport skills and of life values learned through sport.
  • Promote the moral and character development of student athletes.
  • Foster spiritual development both on and off the playing field.
  • Help parents most effectively support their children along their sport journey.

OA achieves these goals by:

  • Providing professional training to all coaches – PLC Coaches Clinic.
  • Sharing information and resources with parents – PLC Parent Workshop and materials.
  • Beginning each athletic season with a Sports Commissioning Mass.
  • Offering opportunities for guest speakers.
  • Promoting the values of the PLC program throughout the school community.

OA Coaches Are Focused On More Than Just Winning Games

The day to day leaders of OA’s Play Like a Champion Program are our dedicated coaches. They are the ones in the trenches spending quite a bit of time with our student athletes teaching them not only skills specific to their respective sports, but life skills as well. They are called to lead by example and to be role models for our young athletes. Here is a letter the Athletic Department received from a parent from another school:

I wanted to write a note of appreciation for one of your coaches. He has earned several fans in our town. Your team recently defeated us in sectional play. After the game, the coach took the time to encourage one of our players. That player was a member of my family and I cannot begin to describe how much that encouragement meant to her. She was elated. What a class act on the part of your coach. It is great to see a coach who truly “gets it” and understands the true point of coaching young people. I just wanted to pass along my deepest thanks on behalf of our family and commend you for having a coach that represents your institution so well.

OA is proud to offer a coaching staff that “gets it” and focuses on more than just winning games. This is what the Play Like a Champion Program is all about.
