Oldenburg Academy of the Immaculate Conception student, John Rohrig, tied for first place at the Second Annual Batesville’s Got Talent contest on Saturday, February 23 at 7 p.m. at the Batesville High School auditorium. The talent contest was sponsored by the Mayor’s Youth Council and was sold out. Each of the 11 acts made it through a talent search audition and semifinals before being chosen to perform at the show.
John Rohrig, an Oldenburg Academy junior, performed two songs on guitar at Batesville’s Got Talent. The first was a song that he wrote for his friend’s wedding. It is still untitled. “I played it because I thought people would like it,” John said of the upbeat song. He also played “Fight,” a song that he wrote a few months ago. It’s about how fathers and their sons often contradict each other and don’t understand each other all of the time. He dedicated it to his father. “It was a fun time and a great experience for everyone, even for the people who didn’t make it to the final round,” John said when asked about Batesville’s Got Talent. John has been playing the guitar since third grade. He has one electric guitar, four acoustic guitars, and one 12 string guitar. He offers private guitar lessons. John also plays the piano, drums and bass guitar. When asked what he will do with the $750 prize money that he won, John said that he put it in the bank and is thinking about purchasing music equipment with it. John also plays guitar and sings at his church and at nursing homes. He recently played the National Anthem at an Oldenburg Academy varsity boys’ basketball game. He was also a member of the Oldenburg Academy Concert Choir that performed at the State Schools Music Contest on Saturday, February 16. The ensemble placed silver. John isn’t sure what he will do after he graduates from Oldenburg Academy in 2009, but he is looking at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. He would like to study voice and guitar performance. Oldenburg Academy congratulates John for his outstanding performance. |
