Oldenburg Academy Community Chorus performs at Carnegie Hall

The Oldenburg Academy Community Chorus performed Beethoven’s Mass in C Major at Carnegie Hall on March 14, 2010. This multi-generational chorus was part of a 270 voice choir that performed with the New England Symphonic Ensemble under the direction of guest conductor John Rutter.

“I was overjoyed when a music professor recommended me as a director for this performance,” said Liz Beiersdorfer, OA music faculty. “Performing at Carnegie Hall is what every musician aspires to, and being able to work under the instruction of such a highly regarded conductor was amazing. We all viewed this as a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

“The superb musical training I received at the Academy prepared me for Carnegie Hall,” remarked Vanessa Prickel ’99.

“Carnegie Hall was magical," said Alexa Fangman ‘13

The Oldenburg Academy Community Chorus is made up of the following individuals, under the direction of Liz Beiersdorfer: Molly Albers, Cathy Cheever Breeden ’74, Kathryn Chaffee ‘13, Alexa Fangman ‘13, Debbie Gardner, Dr. Mark Gardner, John Harrah ’07, Samantha Jarman ‘13, Ruth King, Janicee Miller, Lisa Miller, Clare Parker, Jane Parker, Vanessa Prickel ’99, Sr. Jean Michael Sauntry, OSF ’49, Therese Staublin ’73, Stephanie Taylor ‘12, and Matthew Trossman.

Members of the OA Community Chorus rehearsed in the Oldenburg Academy Auditorium two to three times per month from April 2009 until March 2010. Members came from Indianapolis, Muncie, Virginia, Cincinnati, Batesville, and Dearborn County. Once in New York, the chorus joined with other choral groups from all over the United States. The combined chorus rehearsed with John Rutter for approximately 10 hours over the course of two days.

Chorus members were in New York City from March 11-15 and also spent some time enjoying Times Square, Broadway productions, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, and a variety of restaurants.

John Rutter is a well known choral composer, former Director of Music at Clare College, founder of the Cambridge Singers, and guest conductor and lecturer. NBC's Today Show called Rutter "the world's greatest living composer and conductor of choral music.”
