Oldenburg Academy Wins Girls Sectional Championship

The Oldenburg Academy girls tennis team defeated Batesville 4-1 Saturday (5/22) to win the IHSAA Sectional #59 Championship at South Dearborn. In #1 singles play, freshman Gretchen Wilder defeated Molly White 6-3, 6-2. In #2 singles, junior Katie Wanstrath defeated Katie Zimmerle 6-2, 6-1. In #3 singles, junior Molly Wilder defeated Ellen Heppner 6-2, 6-1. The #1 doubles team of junior Meghan Wanstrath and sophomore Chrissy Wanstrath defeated Jordan Lowery and Emily Helvie 6-4, 7-6. Lastly, the #2 doubles team of junior Hillary Nolting and senior Georgia Smith fell to Meredith Heckman and Ali Meyer in 3 sets: 4-6, 7-5, 2-6. The team previously defeated South Dearborn 4-1 in the Semifinal on Thursday to advance to Saturday’s Final.

The Twisters advance to the Regional Semifinals to be played at Richmond High School Tuesday (5/25) at 4:30 pm. The team will take on Sectional #10 winner Franklin County. The Twisters competed against Franklin County during the regular season on May 5th and won the match 5-0. If the team is victorious on Tuesday, they will play in the Regional Final at Richmond on Wednesday (5/26) at 4:30 pm against the winner of Tuesday’s Centerville/Shenandoah match. If the team emerges as Regional Champions, the Semi-State takes place this Saturday (5/29) at North Central High School at 10:00 am.

The Sectional victory marks the first time in thirty years that an Oldenburg Academy tennis team has won a Sectional Championship. Until Saturday, the 1980 ICA team had been the only girls tennis team to win the Sectional in the school’s history. The win also marked the end of a remarkable run of 15 straight Sectional titles for Batesville High School. The victory improved the team’s record to 16-2 on the year, which stands to be a school record. Earlier in the season on April 17th, the team had a convincing 1st place finish at the Shelbyville Invitational, which was also a school first. The only two losses for the Twisters came at the Silver Creek Invitational on April 10th to Plainfield and Silver Creek, both who are ranked in the Top 30 in the state.

The Twisters are coached by Bertie Schmidt who is in her 21st season as head coach. Coach Schmidt is joined by volunteer assistants Bill Wanstrath and Mark Wilder. In addition to the team’s success on the court this year, the coaches are very proud of the team’s accomplishments in the classroom. The members of the varsity team boast an average cumulative GPA of 3.816 and senior Georgia Smith has been nominated for Academic All-State.
