![]() Oldenburg Academy girls tennis wins regional championship The Twisters advance to the Semi-State which will be played at North Central High School in Indianapolis Saturday (5/29) at 10:00 am. The team will take on #8 ranked Center Grove who defeated Roncalli to win the Center Grove Regional. If the team is victorious on Saturday, they will be among eight teams that would advance to the State Finals held June 4-5 in Indianapolis. Also, if the #1 doubles team of Meghan Wanstrath and Chrissy Wanstrath win their match, but the team loses, they would then advance to the Individual State Finals held June 11-12 in Indianapolis, as they have yet to lose a match in postseason play. The Regional victory marks the second time an Oldenburg Academy team in any sport has won a Regional Championship. The last team to do so was the 2002 volleyball team. Also, according to IHSAA Sport Information Director Jason Wille, the win places Oldenburg Academy among the smallest schools to win a Regional Championship in the history of the state tournament. Fort Wayne Canterbury, Cambridge City Lincoln, and Northeast Dubois are other small schools who have accomplished the feat. The victory improved the team’s record to 18-2 on the year, which stands to be a school record. The only two losses for the Twisters came at the Silver Creek Invitational on April 10th to Plainfield and Silver Creek, both who are ranked in the Top 30 in the state. The Twisters are coached this year by Bertie Schmidt who is in her 21st season as head coach. Coach Schmidt is joined by volunteer assistants Bill Wanstrath and Mark Wilder. In addition to the team’s success on the court this year, the coaches are very proud of the team’s accomplishments in the classroom. The members of the varsity team boast an average cumulative GPA of 3.816 and senior Georgia Smith has been nominated for Academic All-State. |
