Celebrities helped make OA’s annual pro-am golf classic a success!

July 9, 2010

The rain on June 14th didn’t stop the stars from shining at Oldenburg Academy’s 19th annual golf outing at Hillcrest Golf & Country Club. Dave Alexander – former Purdue baseball coach, Ray Donaldson - former center for the Indianapolis Colts, Gerry Faust - former football head coach of Notre Dame, Gene Keady - former Purdue men’s basketball coach, Bruce Kozerski - former Cincinnati Bengals center, Larry Luebbers - former Cincinnati Reds pitcher, Dan Ross – head coach of Purdue men’s swimming & diving team and Ken Shields - former NKU men’s basketball coach, enjoyed a day of golf along with 21 foursomes and 13 golf professionals.

"We've been able to build an impressive list of celebrities over the last couple of years,” said Jeff Nolting, golf classic co-chair. “We appreciate their participation and unselfish commitment of time to help Oldenburg Academy deliver this one of a kind event."

Legendary Notre Dame Head football coach Gerry Faust delivered an inspiring talk to the dinner crowd highlighting his accomplishments at Moeller High School in Cincinnati and his coaching career at Notre Dame. He spoke of how his trust in God led him to his dream of coaching at Notre Dame, and when it didn’t work out as planned, he didn’t look at it as a failure. He spoke of the importance of turning unrealized dreams around and moving forward with your life.

The evening concluded with the golf awards being announced. First place winners in each of the three flights were awarded a beautiful Nambe’ crystal tray donated by John and Joan Hillenbrand. The winners in the Twister Flight were Bill Goldsmith, Marc Jansing, Dave Laudick, Jerry Merkel and pro John Gordon. St. Francis Flight winners were Thomas Brown, Jon Geers, Jim Geers, Noel Mungcal and pro Andy Kirkoff. The top team in the Hail Mary flight included Cindy Ziemke, Rachel Werner, Sue DiBease, and Michelle Garcia, with pro Chad Ayres.

Additional prizes were given to Bill Gardner, Larry Luebbers, Bill Kloote and David Conrad for closest to the pin. Longest drive winners were Tom Fledderman and Katie Gardner, and the putting contest was won by Bill Fisher, Jerry Merkel and Ben Brunsman, respectively. The raffle prize, a year’s tuition at Oldenburg Academy ($6,850) or $3,000 cash, was won by Julia Hunter from Greensburg.

“We thank all our celebrities, sponsors, golf participants, advertisers, gift and product donors, raffle ticket purchasers and volunteers who helped to make this a fantastic day for OA and our students” said Tim Ziemke, co-chair of this year’s event.

“Save the date for Oldenburg Academy’s 20th Annual Golf Classic at Hillcrest Golf & Country Club on Monday, June 13, 2011,” said Debbie Lamping, OA Advancement Specialist. “We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!”
