Lady Twisters Capture Third Consecutive Tennis Regional Championship

The Oldenburg Academy girls tennis team defeated Richmond Wednesday evening (5/23) to win the IHSAA Regional Championship hosted by Richmond for the third consecutive year. In #1 singles play, junior Gretchen Wilder fell in three sets to Peyton Young 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. In #2 singles, freshman Sarah Wilder defeated Katy Robinson 6-2, 6-2. In #3 singles, senior Chrissy Wanstrath defeated Madina Seytmuradova 6-1, 6-3. The #1 doubles team of freshman Ivy Glaser and junior Hannah Hanauer fell to Maddie Farris and Ciera de Courcy 1-6, 1-6. Lastly, the #2 doubles team of sophomore Claire Dickey and freshman Ella Lamping defeated Julia Hayes and Krissy Kramer 6-3, 6-3. The team previously defeated New Castle 4-1 in the Regional Semifinal on Tuesday (5/22) to advance to the Regional Final.

The Lady Twisters improve their overall record to 17-6 on the season and advance to the Semi-State which will be played at Center Grove High School this Saturday (5/28) at 10:00 am. The team will take on Terre Haute South who defeated Crawfordsville 3-2 to win the Greencastle Regional. If the team is victorious on Saturday, they will be among eight teams that would advance to the State Finals held June 1-2 in Indianapolis. The quarterfinal match would take place at Lawrence Central High School on June 1 against the winner of the Carmel/Munster Semi-State match at Laporte.

Coach Mark Wilder congratulated the team on the regional title, reminding them that the victory was especially sweet given OA had graduated five varsity players last year. He noted, “One of our team’s goals and objectives was to win sectional and regional, but we knew we would be challenged along the way. The finals against Richmond played out just as I had hoped at 3-2.”

The regional championship becomes only the fourth regional championship in any sport in school history (Tennis 2010, 2011, 2012; Volleyball 2002).
