Ashley Hunter Valedictorian Speech | May 31, 2026

Hi, I'm Ashley, and I'm excited to speak today. I don't particularly have much to say, but the best valedictorian speeches are short anyway.

I'm going to start with thanking all the relatives, friends, faculty and staff, and anyone else who is here today in support of the Class of 2026.

We are so grateful for your profound love and support for each of us, simply manifested in your presence here today.

Moreover, congratulations to the senior class.

Over the course of these past four years, I am thankful to have gotten to know each of you. Each one of you has unique talents, interests, and many more defining characteristics that make you extraordinary individuals.

However, you all share one thing in common: the potential to be great.

I will admit that in the past four years, I have tried various opportunities that I found were not for me. Whether it was a job that didn't suit me, a relationship that began to conflict with my own ideals, or an activity that I simply accepted I was not good at, I am glad that I invested time and effort into those opportunities.

They helped me learn more about myself.

This next part of our lives is a critical point in which we learn about ourselves and what we want for our futures. Whether you go into a trade, a new field of study, or a new job, embrace that it is new and different from opportunities you've had previously.

I want you to understand that the greatest possible disservice you can do to yourself is to live with the mentality that you have one goal and it will never change.

Your potential is entirely too great to be limited to one ambition.

Most of you have selected a major or a trade that you are interested in. Many of you will discover that you wish to change your mind. That doesn't mean the course of your life is in ruin. It doesn't mean you're going backwards.

You are simply being rerouted on a new trajectory.

I want to remind you that you each have a place in the world.

There is no limit to what opportunities you can immerse yourself in, what people you choose to form connections with, or what hobbies will bring you joy and help you grow as a person.

Try everything.

In this way, you will avoid stagnation. You will continue to progress forward, discovering what you love and what you hate, developing new abilities, and becoming your greatest self.

That's growth.

Above all, remember that you are all entirely too unique and even peculiar to have but one aspiration. We are meant to explore and learn and grow and change—not confine ourselves to one pursuit.

Put yourself out there and accept that you will face rejection. You will find that some aspirations are simply not for you. You will come to accept that specific relationships in your life are meant to come to a close.

It's all okay.

Failure and disappointment are inevitable. But it is what you choose to do with those shortcomings that defines your success.

As you enter into the next part of your lives, go beyond what is comfortable. Remain open to new and unfamiliar opportunities, and find yourself.

So once more, congratulations.

Remind yourself that you are capable of great things—you just need to give yourself the opportunity.

I am so proud of you all for how far you've come and excited to see how far each of you will go.

Thank you.
